Sober Living Straight From Detox. A Good Plan?

Sober Living Straight From Detox. A Good Plan?

As a sober living, we get calls from prospective guests at every possible stage in their recovery from still running to 20 years sober. Quite a range! One not so uncommon group is guys coming out of detox.

Is going straight from detox to sober living even an option?

The answer depends.

Very few things in life follow a straight path. Flexibility and courage are necessary to both recognize the next right action and then to take it. As chaotic and unmanageable our lives were when we were using, there was at least a simple consistency to it: Get loaded. Whatever it took, whatever had to be done, wherever we had to go, if there was a drink or a drug on offer, we did it.

Sobriety is different. The path of recovery is infinitely more rewarding but the decisions we face may not always be as clear cut. For a lot of us, true recovery begins in a detox facility and so an early decision most of us are faced with is

Where do I go after I get out of detox?

Such a decision is not to be taken lightly. Speaking to your counselor, therapist, sponsor, or trusted friend is usually a good place to start.

Sober living CAN be a perfect transitional solution for some people struggling with substance abuse who are coming out of detox and NOT for others.

When a prospective guest is in, or is waiting to enter, a detox and calls to inquire about living at La Peer House afterwards, we have an open conversation with them to determine if we’re the right fit. Some of the topics we touch are:

  • What did their past usage, recovery, and sobriety look like?
  • What are their goals?
  • Have they ever been in residential treatment? Multiple times?
  • Are they planning to attend PHP or IOP?
  • Have they lived in sober livings in the past?
  • Etc, etc.

Everybody is different. If you’re going into or coming out detox and considering sober living, give us a call. We’re happy to discuss your options and answer any questions you may have. For many of the people who call us, we are not the right fit, in which case we provide resources and other places that are better suited to you. For some however, the independence and accountability La Peer House offers may be just what you need after detoxing.
