28 Aug Addiction, Hobbies, and Recovery
One of the great things about living in recovery is discovering the joys of a sober life. Addiction robs us both of what we used to like and the opportunity to discover new passions.
Do any of these sound familiar?
- “Getting loaded makes x more fun.”
- “Of course I love doing x, I just need another hit first.”
- “Do I wanna go do x?!? Nah…I’d much rather sit on my couch and get high.”
While in the throes of addiction, you drop the things you used to love doing as you pour more and more of your time and money into your drug of choice. The things that used to give you joy and meaning and flow fade from memory. Worst of all, your stinking thinking swoops in to convince you that this is actually what you want.
That’s why it’s so important in recovery to reconnect with what we loved doing in the past or might love doing in the future. For me, and a lot of the guys at the La Peer House fishing or being on the water is just such an activity. Something about the hunt gets our juices flowing in a primal way, drugs just can’t.
So, we’re headed to sea. All of us. Current guests, past guests, staff, and even friends of La Peer House are headed out next Sunday (9/5/2021) to fish with sober friends. After all, you’re not fighting addiction alone, you have a family of addicts here to support you. Besides, the only thing better than reconnecting with hobbies is doing so surrounded by the camaraderie of fellow addicts.
The boat’s leaving from Marina Del Rey so if you’re anywhere in the Los Angeles or Orange County area and want to come, check out the Facebook event or give us a holler!
